Can a potato be sliced open on the top before baking?

Answer

Yes, you can slice open a potato on the top before baking. People often do this to:

  • Vent steam – A small slit or cross-cut prevents the skin from bursting as the potato cooks.
  • Speed up cooking – Opening the top slightly helps heat penetrate the inside more evenly.
  • Crispier skin / fluffier inside – The cut lets some moisture escape so the skin crisps up while the inside stays light.
  • Add flavor – You can tuck in butter, oil, garlic, herbs, or cheese before baking so they melt in as it cooks.

If you want a traditional “jacket potato” with crispy skin, make just a small slit or X rather than cutting it all the way open. If you want more of a “loaded baked potato,” you can slice deeper and pull it open a bit in the last 10–15 minutes of baking.
