Question
Is it recommended to bake a potato at 450 degrees?
Yes, baking a potato at 450 degrees is sometimes recommended, especially if you're aiming for a crispier skin and a shorter bake time. Higher heat helps produce a nicely textured skin while still cooking the inside evenly, especially for medium to large russet potatoes. Just be sure to pierce the potatoes with a fork to allow steam to escape and place them directly on the oven rack or a baking sheet. If your potatoes are on the smaller side or your oven runs hot, you might consider dropping the temperature slightly to avoid overcooking.
Attached is a chart comparing oven temperatures and bake times for unwrapped, medium to large russet potatoes (about 8 to 10 ounces each).
To check for doneness, squeeze the potato gently with tongs or pierce it with a fork. The skin should be firm and crisp, and the inside should feel soft.
