The Great Big Idaho® Potato Truck to Make Final Appearance of Its 2012 Tour
EAGLE, Idaho, December 12, 2012—The Utah State University Aggies have earned a second chance to bring home the Famous Idaho® Potato Bowl trophy. On Saturday, December 15th, the Aggies will take on the University of Toledo Rockets on the blue turf of Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho. The Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) is the sponsor of this cold-weather showdown, which has a history of dramatic finishes.
"We couldn’t be more excited about the second annual Famous Idaho® Potato Bowl. This game provides a unique opportunity for the entire Idaho® potato industry to support a nationally recognized sporting event that showcases one of Idaho’s most important agricultural products—the potato,” said Frank Muir, President and CEO, IPC. “And the timing is perfect. More people purchase Idaho® potatoes in November and December than any other time of year and this bowl game helps remind millions of consumers to always look for the famous “Grown in Idaho®” seal when buying potatoes.”
Anyone watching the game will have no doubt who the title sponsor is. The IPC will receive extensive recognition during the game and throughout the stadium including:
Giving Back
Outside of the stadium, the Great Big Idaho® Potato Truck, "the largest potato on wheels" will make its last public appearance in 2012. In celebration of the IPC’s 75th anniversary, the 6-ton tater spent seven months traveling across the country to help raise funds and awareness for Meals On Wheels (MOW), a non-profit organization that delivers one million meals each day to homebound seniors.
While at the game, the Truck will help the IPC raise much-needed funds for the Boise MOW chapter. From 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. a “Signature Wall” will be set up in front of the Truck and for every signature collected, $1.00 will be donated to MOW (up to $2,500).
The Idaho Grower Shippers Association (IGSA) will donate three potatoes to the Idaho Food Bank's Eastern Idaho branch on behalf of each fan who attends the game. Last year approximately 42,000 pounds of potatoes were donated! In addition to the potatoes, the IGSA will also make a $5,000 cash donation to the food bank.
The Game
The Aggies finished their final season with an overall record of 10-2, and the Rockets closed theirs with a 9-3 record. The Famous Idaho® Potato Bowl is the second game on the Bowl calendar and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN and on ESPN Radio on Saturday, December 15th at 2:30 p.m. MT. The game, which has been played since 1997, has an average score of 38-25 and six of the past eight games were won on the final drive.
