2006 Harvest Is Strong

EAGLE, ID, October 2006 - Idaho Potato growers will harvest approximately 328,000 acres of Idaho Potatoes this year, yielding nearly 12 billion pounds. The overall appearance of the crop appears to be uniformly smooth and consistent. The extremely warm weather in early August did not have an adverse impact on the crop, in fact it may have accelerated the harvest. The Idaho Potato industry's mastery of the state's exceptional irrigation system ensures that despite high temperatures, even drought, irrigation is the primary water source and thus the crop is managed quite effectively. (Weather and other physical elements are major contributors to the "yield.")

The Idaho Potato Commission Backgrounder

For close to 70 years, the Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) has been the national authority on the world’s best-loved potato: the Idaho Potato. The IPC consists of nine members - respected individuals who work within the industry – representing growers, shippers and processors. These individuals are nominated by their peers from the Idaho Potato industry and then a finalist is selected to serve by the Idaho state governor. Supporting the members is a full staff based in the IPC headquarters in Boise, ID.

The 2004 Idaho Potato Harvest

The 2004 harvest has been excellent. The weather this year provided ideal growing conditions (versus last year's drought conditions). Ample rain and favorable growing temperatures in Idaho have created uniformly large and smooth potatoes with consistent shape.
